please explain kinning

i feel like a middle aged dad trying to relate to his angsty emo son but can someone please explain what kinning is to me?
like i've got a general idea but i've seen definitions ranging from "it's when you really relate to a character" to "YOU ARE THE CHARACTER IN MIND, BODY, AND SPIRIT" and i'm just a little confused

(next i'm gonna do the awkward dad thing and be like "oh i kin haruhi fujioka" and it doesnt really work but i'm trying really hard to connect with my kids who think i'm old and lame but this just makes them think i'm even older and lamer)

When younger people use words I don't understand I just pretend that they don't exist.

ok mood :') but also i think it's just a thing where people really relate to/see themselves in one or two characters with varying degrees of intensity lmao

kinning is honestly different for everybody, and from what I've seen the definition has shifted and is still debated. my PERSONAL relationship with kinning is that I feel a very strong, often spiritual connection with characters. I often kin as a coping mechanism (identity is hard, ya know?). some feel they ARE that character, or that they were the character in a past life (im only this way with one of my kins). it is very... hard to find a concrete definition, honestly. most peoples kins are actually just
