i think that the game being both very different to the source material while also sharing a lot of the same themes is what makes it as interesting as it is. lain's characterization is definitely a difference that stands out. that combined with the more grounded/darker tone makes the story itself feel a lot more like a psychological horror stuff than... whatever the anime qualifies as
