About me:

My name is Nicholas. I am a lifelong underground music documentarian/recordist who has lived all over the West Coast and also Austin, TX. I have lived in Oakland, CA for the last 8 years and want to live here indefinitely, but I feel strong cultural ties to Pacific Northwest indie rock.

-

I currently have a "bee in my bonnet" to return social media back to being helpful to musicians, and I strongly feel Facebook has failed the music world. Literally every musician I have spoken with feels MySpace was a vastly superior platform for them than Facebook is. I am stoked this "fake" MySpace exists, and I hope to get a lot of new friends on it, but I am frustrated the music player on it only allows for one song, which isn't good enough. If the music player was able to contain a bunch of songs like the old MySpace did, then this site would be great.

Check out this (unfinalized) mix I'm working on of a song I recorded while a was a UCSC student for the Santa Cruz band The Loyal Sons and Daughters in 2003.

My friend Justin was really prolific with his cassette 4 track recording 20 years ago, and he did this song, which I did the mastering on:

I mixed this for Oakland/Santa Cruz artist Denney Joints:

I signed Nehemiah St-Danger to my record label. This song is on his record:

I'm trying to learn bare minimum CSS code so I can make this page look cooler, but I'm currently struggling with it. Hopefully I will figure it out soon.

This is my record label's Bandcamp site. Check out the records I've released and maybe buy one.

BTW although I hope to get my music friends onto this "fake" MySpace, I'm kind of interested that it currently seems to be mostly used by Gen Z people. Gen Z people are super interesting/exotic to me since I'm not friends with any of them nor have any close family who are Gen Z. I'm really curious to know what Gen Z people are interested in culturally, so I hope to learn some things on here.

Who I'd like to meet:

New interesting friendly people.

This website seems to mostly have Gen Z people, which is super interesting. How do I learn what Gen Z are into? I don't personally know any Gen Z people.

hey! I've been trying out recording guitar for the first time. I always end up thinking about Void. I absolutely love how you did the guitars on that one! Maybe it's too big of a question to just ask like this, but how did you go about creating that heavy rhytmic sound? Also, how did you mix it so that the guitar sounds like its far out on both sides? I've been experimenting to no success and I don't know what to call it in order to find anything on google :(
hope you've had an awesome thanksgiving despite covid! Take care, fwiend

Nah Dude: I'm self-taught. After I got my BA at UCSC, I lived in Palo Alto for a year and a half, then went to Evergreen (in Olympia, WA) initially to be in their recording program, but I dropped out of that program after the 1st quarter because I felt the program was geared towards beginners and also that particular year the program was geared towards musicians, not engineers. I'm curious about subscribing to the "Mix With the Masters" online courses, which may be useful. It's taken me a long time to figure out the technology I like for recording and mixing. Right now I have both an analog mixer which I like for mixing rock music, and I have an analog summing setup which is good for music that should sound "cleaner," like this world music record I'm working on right now.

how did you get into music production? I am taking an online university course in mp right with the hopes of improving my recording and mixing. Did you have any formal education in music or have you mostly picked up knowledge as you've spent time in the field? :)

It's frustrating to me the cutoff age for people using Facebook seems to be like 24. People younger than that don't seem to be on Facebook. I would love to have some cool Gen Z Facebook friends, but apparently they just aren't on that site.

Besides apparently this site, what other social media platforms are used by Gen Z? Are they all on a phone, or are there popular websites?

-(argh - I guess long comments aren't allowed here)-

...media and was really happy to start a profile on here. Music people have very basic needs for a social media site that MySpace c. 2006 was basically perfect for. It's crazy to me that there is no current popular social media site that meets those basic needs.

Does anyone here have pages on the "actual" current www.myspace.com website? I set up a new account on it, and the site does work, but I really don't like the design of the layout. The site does have other massive problems that are preventing people from wanting to use it. I am currently getting a team of people together to try to approach MySpace corporate with our issues with the site, and it's possible they might do something about it, but I don't know how complicated it will be to fix the site. It's just insane to me that the site is currently just full of basically "broken" profile pages that the users aren't able to fix, so the site is basically currently a "graveyard." This "fake" MySpace I am typing this message into is much cooler to me than the "real" MySpace, but I don't know how many people who have accounts on here use the site often. I don't know if I will be able to convince my musician friends to start profiles on here. I love social

During the Covid-19 quarantine, I have recently discovered how incredibly comfortable sweatpants are (I strongly prefer the Hanes brand over Fruit of the Loom, though). I can't believe I've been depriving myself of this comfort my whole adult life.

Yo! I'm somewhat in a small indie rock/folk punk scene in CA. Stuff has been pretty slow since COVID but before quarantine the scene was pretty active (yet small). I'm also a Gen Zer who has a odd conglomerate music taste...ranging from punk, alt rock, folk punk, experimental, rap, jazz, some funk, disco, etc etc.
