Like almost all of the times he was just trying to protect himself and others! And I'm sure a lot of people from the gangs also kill and can be considered murderers just because their boss told them to. But they didn't die!?

I appreciate that in the anime it's considered that he MAY be alive - it doesn't completely change the original end but at the same time leaves hope in people's hearts. Though I personally chose to believe that he died.
