THE VIRGIN SUICIDES

I have my critiques of Sofia Coppola however i consider this particular film to be an undeniable masterpiece. It follows the story of the Lisbon sisters in a haze of 70s white, middle class suburbia. Coppola is sensitive and understanding when addressing the perceived turmoils of girlhood but also conveys a grounded and objective view from the community surrounding the girls. It is narrated and unfolds through the eyes of a group of teenage boys infatuated with the mystique of the sisters and uses a purposeful implementation of a heavy male gaze to illustrate the dangers of it. Highly emotional and beautifully shot - every specific hue of colour and tiny motif is meaningful.

THE TREE OF LIFE

A work of impressionistic genius that follows the story of a man reflecting on the death of his brother. The Tree of Life vibrantly displays the brother's childhoods under the complex tyranny of their father (Brad Pitt?!?!?!?) It's difficult to assign a plot to this film as it will morph and change for every individual person that watches it. If i were to describe this film in one word it would simply be 'beautiful.' Every frame is a photograph worthy of being hung in the Louvre.

MYSTERIOUS SKIN

(CW FOR CHILD ABUSE/SEXUAL ABUSE - IF YOU ARE SENSITIVE TO THESE ISSUES DO NOT WATCH THIS FILM!!)

Mysterious Skin follows the parallel stories of Neil and, his antithesis, Brian. Neil works as a male prostitute in light of his grooming and assault by his baseball coach in his childhood. Brian believes he was abducted by aliens and searches to find what happened to him. Araki presents the boys' stories sensitively and with care - a theme not common in his other works- while still displaying deeply uncomfortable and heart breaking scenes. Set over a period of 10 years, the attention to detail is immaculate - one of the most overlooked masterpieces of the 2000s. This film juxtaposes and presents two reactions to trauma, violently dragging the audience along for the ride as the film progresses. I felt almost every human emotion under the sun viewing this film and was left devastated by the ending.
