Why WNBA makes no $

With the re-emergence of women's basketball at the collegiate level, I believe that the women running it and playing it made the decision never to play an alternate version of women's basketball ever again. They have fought for decades against making adjustments to the game that would significantly differentiate it from the version that men play. These women would consider an alternate form of basketball with different court dimensions or rim height a second class form of women's basketball, and they refuse to have anything to do with it. It's an issue of respect - both respect for their own accomplishments and gaining respect from the world of sports. "We play the same kind of basketball that you play."

However, the sport doesn't really look like men's basketball. Women simply don't have the height advantages that men have and they have to play a half feet (on average) below the rim. They don't have the muscle power required for explosive dunking, which is both a dominance display and a form of artistic expression (although women's basketball fans like myself will remind you that you don't get any extra points for it).

So what do women look like playing basketball? Like a bunch of average men playing basketball. I'll explain what I mean.

  • Women's basketball players range on average from 5'6" to 6'6" tall - pretty much the height range of the fans of men's basketball.

  • They don't dunk - but there are many causal male players who can dunk (but their game is limited in lots of other ways).

This leads unobservant male fans to think that "well, these women can't play basketball and they're second class performers at best" and cause them to dismiss the sport out of hand. Some of the more foolish ones think "me and my four buddies in the beer league can beat the Los Angeles Sparks."

It is for this reason that people don't enjoy women's basketball. There is no sexist trates or discrimination, it is simply the pace and aggression of the game that women can't physically reproduce.
