HOW CAN I BE A BETTER ALLY?

https://i.imgur.com/GbknpCA.png

✩ You can't tell if someone is transgender just by looking.

✩ Don't make assumptions about a transgender person's sexual orientation.

✩ If you don't know what pronouns to use, listen first or ask them.

✩ Don't ask a transgender person what their dead name (the name they were given at birth) is.

✩ Understand the differences between "coming out" as lesbian, gay, or bisexual and "coming out" as transgender.

✩ Be careful about confidentiality, disclosure, and "outing."

✩ Understand there is no "right" or "wrong" way to transition, and that it is different for every person.

✩ Don't ask about a transgender person's genitals, surgical status, or sex life.

✩ Be patient with a person who is questioning or exploring their gender identity.

✩ Respect the terminology a transgender person uses to describe their identity.

✩ Challenge anti-transgender remarks or jokes in public spaces, including LGBTQIA2S+ spaces.

✩ Support all-gender public restrooms.

✩ Help make your company or group truly trans-inclusive.

✩ Listen to transgender people.

✩ Learn that transgender people are not new.

WHAT ARE PRONOUNS?

https://i.imgur.com/GbknpCA.png

A pronoun is the word someone uses when referring to someone in the third person. The most common ones used in our society are she/her, he/him and they/them. There are many many more pronouns, such as neopronouns which are a category of new (neo) pronouns used instead of the more common ones. It is important to never assume which pronoun someone uses, nor should you equate gender to pronouns! A person's pronoun choice has nothing to do with gender, for example a woman may feel they want to use they/them pronouns, a non binary person may want to use she/him, and a man may want to use she/her pronouns. Pronouns do not make you any less of your gender! If you aren’t sure what pronoun someone uses just ask them! It does not make conversations awkward, if anything it makes things more comfortable discussing pronouns for people outside of the gender binary and for you to be aware not to misgender someone when referring to them.

PRONOUNS ≠ BIOLOGICAL SEX
PRONOUNS ≠ GENDER IDENTITY
PRONOUNS ≠ SEXUALITY / SEXUAL ORIENTATION

GENDER IDENTITY

https://i.imgur.com/GbknpCA.png

Gender identity is how a person feels and who they know them self to be when it comes to their gender. There are more than two genders, even though in our society the genders that are most recognized are male and female (called the gender binary) and usually is based on someone’s anatomy (the genitals they were born with). This is gender assignment and it is based on an assumption that someone’s genitals match their gender. However, gender isn’t about someone’s anatomy, it is about who they know them self to be. There are many different gender identities, including male, female, transgender, gender neutral, non-binary, agender, pangender, genderqueer, two-spirit (exclusive to first nations / indigenous peoples), third gender, and all, none or a combination of these.

There are many more gender identities than listed. Gender is complex and people are defining themselves in new and different ways as we gain a deeper understanding of identities. Some terms may mean different things to different people. There are certain terms some folks may not like to use or call themselves and some terms that they may like to use or call themselves. If you’re not sure what to call a person, it’s always best to ask anyone what they would like to be called regardless of whether or not you've just been calling them what you assumed was correct. It is always up to us to decide how we identify, and how we express our gender. However you decide or identify deserves to be respected and supported.
