Manga Log: Hamatora

My personal thoughts on the Manga and comparing it to My Hero Academia

(Spoilers will be marked with „#Spoiler!!!“ and „#End of Spoiler!“)

I first got interested in Hamatora because the art was done by Yuuki Kodama who is also the author of Blood Lad. I really like his artstyle and Hamatora did not disappoint.

But not only the art is great, i really enjoyed the story aswell. I usually don't expect that much of a Manga with only 20 Chapters, but let's just say there are muliple reasons why i feel like its fair to compare it to MHA haha.

In Hamatora people with special abilities („Minimums“) are called „Minimum Holders“. Similar to the „Quirks“ in MHA, a Minimum is some sort of genetic anomaly, but to become a real Minimum, it has to be artificially enhanced by a government funded facility called the „Academy“, which is also responsible to train these Minimum Holders to serve national interests.

The main character called Nice however dropped out of the Academy and founded his own private detective agency to solve cases which often involve other Minimum Holders.

The characters of Hamatora are pretty cool in my opinion and even though their Minimums can't really compare to the Quirks in MHA, the fight and action scenes in Hamatora are still very good and exciting.

Spoiler!!!

But especially one character who appears in Chapter 16 really made me think of MHA. His name is Madarabat and he has black, medium length, culry hair, a toothy grin and the ability to temporarily stop other Minimum Holders from using their Minimum. Yes, he really reminded me of Aizawa-Sensei, haha.

End of Spoiler!

Both Hamatora and MHA are inspired by american superhero comics and i think its really interesting to see these similarities and also, of course, the differences.

I don't really want to go deeper into the story, so here are my personal ratings:

Art: 9/10
Story: 8/10
Characters: 7/10
Enjoyment: 8/10 would read again

If you like MHA, you might also like Hamatora, small warning though: Hamatora has some very mild ecchi elements (mostly character design).
