A pronoun is the word someone uses when referring to someone in the third person. The most common ones used in our society are she/her, he/him and they/them. There are many many more pronouns, such as neopronouns which are a category of new (neo) pronouns used instead of the more common ones. It is important to never assume which pronoun someone uses, nor should you equate gender to pronouns! A person's pronoun choice has nothing to do with gender, for example a woman may feel they want to use they/them pronouns, a non binary person may want to use she/him, and a man may want to use she/her pronouns. Pronouns do not make you any less of your gender! If you aren’t sure what pronoun someone uses just ask them! It does not make conversations awkward, if anything it makes things more comfortable discussing pronouns for people outside of the gender binary and for you to be aware not to misgender someone when referring to them.
