i would like to think i was a cool first grader. i had these two doctor who shirts that my mum had painted, one displaying the tardis and the other with the doctor and amy. i would wear these two shirts (layered over each other, obviously) with my rainbow ruffled skirt and my hair tied up in a neat plait. and as i swung on the tree swing behind the school with no one around i realized...

i really was the prettiest and most fashionable at the park.

i met a lady at the bus stop once. i didn't know where she was going, but i saw her there every day, smoking the same brand of cigarette and wearing the same shade of hot pink lipstick. she looked middle-aged. 40? 50?

i had never talked to her, or given her more than a glance. she was just as invisible as the rest of the people standing there, with their scarves and coffee and headphones. one day i had to take the bus, and sat next to her.

i made small talk, analyzing her shoes, and the scratch of her voice.

"i took my time measuring my words with a teaspoon and sorting my thoughts into unnamed cardboard boxes, i'd hate for you to do the same." she had said. "i spent so much time wanting to grow up that i lost the experience. now I'm an old woman, chasing the youth that i lost."

she was so well-spoken.
